Software Used

Most of the arrangements and transcriptions you will find here have been created using the free, open source music transcriptions software, MuseScore.  I have long been a fan of Finale, and I still believe that it is a monument to music transcription software.  However, from time to time I go on a hunt to see how far along the free alternatives have come.  A few years ago I tried all of the alternatives I could find and MuseScore won that contest hands down.  It has really become a viable alternative to the 'big two' (Finale & Sibelius).  I have even taken many of my old Finale scores, exported them as MusicXML and then imported them into MuseScore.  It works quite well and means that I can keep all of my scores in one place.

Here are some of the basic features:

  • Unlimited number of staves
  • Easy and fast note entry with your keyboard, mouse, or MIDI keyboard
  • Integrated sequencer and FluidSynth software synthesizer
  • Import and export of MusicXML and Standard MIDI Files
  • Available for Windows, Mac and Linux
  • Translated in 48 languages
  • GNU GPL licensed
